AI & Public Writing: Sustainable and Unsustainable Wastes

Antonio Byrd (2023) charges scholars, teachers, and students to make written work public to influence future iterations of Large Language Models (LLMs). This paper responds to Byrd's call by considering the relationship between waste and sustainability in the current AI ecosystem. The digital detritus that authors scatter throughout the web is composted into nourishment for LLMs, making under-represented peoples and perspectives more visible; however, this fertilizer can be used in uncontrollable ways, and generative AI exacts a heavy toll on the physical environment.
